The University
The University of Southampton is a leading UK teaching and research institution with a global reputation for leading-edge research and scholarship. The University is one of the UK's top 10 research universities and the School of Engineering is amongst the few very best, top grade 5* rated units in the country. The School of Engineering offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics, Mechanical Engineering and Ship Science. The University has over 22,000 students, around 5000 staff, and an annual turnover in the region of £325 million.

The School of Engineering has strong links with the motorsport industry providing plentiful opportunity for students to pursue a career path in this related high-technology field. Students on the MEng Mechanical Engineering programme now have the option of specialising in an automotive theme in their 3rd and 4th years.
The University runs the only postgraduate course in the UK in Race Car Aerodynamics. This programme is aimed at graduates and similarly qualified individuals from engineering, scientific or mathematical backgrounds, who desire advanced specialisation in aerodynamics. The success of the course was demonstrated recently as the entire 2007 class all got jobs in Formula One.

Notable Southampton alumni include Adrian Newey (Technical Director) and Ben Agathangelou (ex Head of Aerodynamics) at Red Bull Racing.


The School of Engineering Sciences has an enviable variety of Wind Tunnels that are used in its extensive teaching and research programmes. The Wolfson Unit MTIA has been involved in a wide variety of projects and is a UK Sport Innovation Partner.
The R J Mitchell Wind Tunnel has been used extensively by Formula 1 Racing Teams, Indy Racing League and CART racing teams, LMG GT/GTS-class sports cars and world-leading aerospace companies. Racing Teams include - BAR, Benneton, Penske, Prost, Sauber and Tyrell.
